How It Works

The science behind laser hair removal is called selective photothermolysis. Dark hair follicles contain more melanin (pigment) than surrounding skin cells. When the laser beam hits a dark hair, the strand absorbs that energy and channels the heat straight down to the root.

A short burst at the right wavelength raises the follicle’s temperature past the point where it can regenerate. The surrounding skin stays cool and unaffected because it reflects most of the light rather than absorbing it.

Hair grows in cycles. The laser can only disable follicles during the active growth phase (called anagen), which is why multiple sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart are necessary. Most patients see significant reduction after 5-7 treatments. Some areas with stubborn or dense growth may take 10-12 sessions.

The CoolGlide also treats faster than most systems on the market. Areas that take 30 minutes with other lasers often finish in 15 with the CoolGlide’s wider treatment window.

What to Expect During Your Session

Arrive with clean, freshly shaved skin in the treatment area. Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners for two weeks before your appointment.

Tamra calibrates the laser settings based on your skin tone, hair color, and the area being treated. Tamra performs every treatment herself. You will never be handed off to an assistant or technician in training.

The CoolGlide’s built-in cooling tip chills the skin on contact, making each pulse feel like a quick, warm snap against the skin. Most sessions last between 10 and 45 minutes depending on the size of the area. Smaller zones like the upper lip take under 5 minutes.

You can return to normal activities immediately. Some patients notice mild redness that fades within a few hours.

Aftercare Instructions

Proper aftercare between sessions protects your skin and maximizes results. Here is what to keep in mind after each treatment:

  • Avoid direct sun exposure on the treated area for at least one week. Apply SPF 30+ sunscreen when going outside.
  • Skip hot baths, saunas, and intense exercise for 24-48 hours. Heat can irritate freshly treated skin.
  • Do not wax, tweeze, or pluck hairs between sessions. Shaving is fine because it leaves the root intact for the next treatment.
  • Expect some shedding of treated hairs over the next 1-3 weeks. This is normal and means the treatment is working.
  • Apply aloe vera gel or a gentle moisturizer if you notice any redness or sensitivity.

Tamra will walk you through everything after your first session and adjust your aftercare plan based on how your skin responds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does laser hair removal hurt?
Most patients describe the sensation as a quick, warm snap. The CoolGlide’s cooling tip makes it far more comfortable than waxing. Sensitive areas like the bikini line feel slightly more intense, but the pulses are so fast that discomfort is brief.

How many sessions will I need?
Most areas require 5-7 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Coarser or denser hair may need 10-12 sessions. Tamra will give you a realistic estimate during your consultation based on your hair type, skin tone, and treatment area.

Is it truly permanent?
The FDA classifies laser hair removal as “permanent hair reduction.” Most patients see 80-90% reduction after completing their treatment series. Some fine or light hairs may persist, and occasional maintenance sessions (once or twice a year) keep results smooth long-term.

Can laser work on light or blonde hair?
Laser targets melanin in the hair follicle, so it works best on dark hair. Very light blonde, gray, or red hair may not respond as well. During your consultation, Tamra will assess your hair color and let you know what results to expect.

What skin types can be treated?
The CoolGlide is one of the few laser systems safe and effective across all skin types, from very fair to very dark. It also works well on tanned skin, unlike many older laser platforms.
